Resistive Shimming Advancements for High Homogeneity Magnets in MagLab's DC Magnet User Program
Learn about the innovative resistive shim technology for achieving unparalleled magnetic field homogeneity at high field strengths. The Series-Connected Hybrid Magnet (SCH) project at MagLab is pushing boundaries in magnetic field generation with exceptional homogeneity levels. Water-cooled shim coils are developed to enable 1 ppm homogeneity over a 10 mm diameter spherical volume. The prototypes tested in the Keck magnet achieved a world-record 5.6 ppm homogeneity at 25 T. This technology is pivotal for advancing NMR magnets using high-temperature superconductors to operate at 30 T and beyond.

Resistive Shimming for Higher Homogeneity Magnets in the MagLab’s DC Magnet User ProgramMark D. Bird, Florida State University, DMR 0603042 The Series-Connected Hybrid Magnet (SCH) being developed at the MagLab will provide an unprecedented magnetic field of 36 T with 1 ppm homogeneity over a 10 mm diameter spherical volume (DSV). To accomplish this level of homogeneity at such a high field, new water-cooled shim coils are being developed (above). Prototypes recently tested in the MagLab’s Keck magnet successfully demonstrated a world-record value of 5.6 ppm over 10 mm DSV at 25 T (left). After being implemented in the SCH magnet for DC Magnet users, this resistive shim technology will help enable the next generation of NMR magnets proposed to use high-temperature super-conductors to operate at 30T and above
