  1. Children under four years must not travel in the front seat of a motor vehicle which has two or more rows of seats. Children between four and seven years must not travel in the front seat unless all other seats in the rear row(s) are occupied by children under seven years of age. After all seating positions fitted with restraints/seatbelts are occupied, carrying additional unrestrained children as passengers is prohibited. Note - for children under seven years, taxis and buses (12 seats or more including the driver) are exempt from the mandatory child restraint law. New rules- continued

  2. All passengers in a motor vehicle must wear a seatbelt or a child restraint/booster seat. It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that all passengers, including children and adults, are wearing a child restraint, booster seat, or seatbelt. Penalty (for the driver) $263 for passengers under 16 years; and three demerit points Seatbelts

  3. A driver can only use a mobile phone in a vehicle if it is secured in a commercially designed cradle (holder) fitted to the vehicle. Or it can be remotely operated by the driver without the driver touching any part of the phone. Making or receiving a phone call using a hands free unit is permitted. All other functions (including video calls, texting and emailing) are prohibited. A driver can not hold a mobile phone (whether engaged in a phone call or not) unless they are passing the phone to a passenger. NOTE - Learner and P1 drivers are NOT permitted to use a hand-held or hands-free mobile phone at all while driving. Mobile phones

Booster seats for older children to fit up to 95th % 8yo (approx. 50% 10 yo, 10% 12 yo) Maximum and minimum shoulder strap heights (linked to shoulder height markers) Shoulder height marking to guide the selection of restraint size (no longer weight based) Seatbelt path through the restraint to be marked in specified colours depending upon restraint Requirement for booster seats to ensure lower leg bend is 45 degrees to avoid promoting slouching and submarining Lateral support for booster seats to support children when sleeping Maximum size profile for booster seats (to try to fit three across rear seat of vehicle), including buckle access Booster cushions deleted from standard Changes to the Standard – what to expectDRAFT information only – this may be subject to change
