  1. July 24, 2012 Esri Roads and HighwaysAn Introduction William Isley Majunu Seran

  2. Agenda • Product Overview • Desktop • Demo: Network editing & event behaviors • Data Model • Demo: LRS configuration • Web Service • Demo: REST services & JavaScript developer samples • Roadway Inventory Editing • Demo: Web based event editing • Release Schedule • Questions

  3. Product Overview

  4. Esri Roads and Highways Esri’s LRS solution for DOTs Unifies existing DOT systems through a centralized LRS in the GIS, enabling data fusion and sharing across business units • Plan, manage, and maintain roadway LRS networks • Author maps that fuse data from different LRMs • Publish and share linear referenced data services

  5. DOT Challenges Other Systems Pavement LRS • Many business units, resulting in many different LRSs and LRMs • Data not easily shared between business units • GIS not well integrated Bridge LRS Roadway Inventory LRS Safety LRS Traffic LRS Enterprise GIS

  6. Centralized LRS and Event Publication • Roads & Highways • Centralize LRS managed in GIS • Support for multiple LRMs • Publication of LRS, events, and measure changes as GDB and REST • DOT Business Systems • Manage and exposes event data • Consume GIS LRS • Consume other business system events Pavement Other Systems Bridge Roadway Inventory Safety LRS Traffic Roads & Highways

  7. Product Overview • Roads & Highways Desktop • ArcMap LRS network editing toolbar • ArcCatalog LRS network management tools • ArcGIS route & event layers • Geodatabase LRS network dataset • Geoprocessing tools (calibration management) • Roads & Highways Server • ArcGIS Server map service support for route and event layers • LRS REST services • JavaScript web developer samples • Roadway Inventory Editor (coming SP2) • Bundled with… • Production Mapping, Workflow Manager, Reviewer

  8. Desktop Functionality

  9. Editing Activities 100 0 • Create Route • Extend Route • Realign Route • Reassign Route • Retire Route • Calibration 120 0 100 0 20 80 100 retired 20 100 0 80 I-110 I-10 I-10 80 0 20 100 1-10 retired 52 0 100

  10. Source Geometry • Authoritative geometry for route edit • Polyline feature(s) • Sources: • CAD • Shapefile • FGDB • ArcMap digitized Source Geometry

  11. Redlining • Facility to communicate required LRS edits • Polyline feature • General roadway modification geometry • Specifies attributes and measures Redline Feature

  12. Event Measure Behaviors • Before Realignment • Stay Put • When the LRS routes are edited, measure behavior rules can be applied to events. • Events can have a different behavior for each type of LRS edit • Move • Snap • Retire

  13. Temporality • Date ranges can be applied to LRS edits • Event measure updates reflect date ranges of LRS edits • Historical event measures that change due to LRS edits are “retired” • “Temporal View Date” enables data visualization and query for any moment in time • View After • View Before

  14. DemoDesktop Functionality

  15. Data Model

  16. Dynamic routes • Dynamic routes are generated from centerline geometry and calibration point measures LRS Network A 0 30 • Two routes • 4 Calibration points • 3 centerlines -5 LRS Network B 45 Centerline The two routes above are derived from three centerline lines

  17. ALRS schema for dynamic routes • Dynamic routes are generated from two feature classes and two tables Route Route definitions Calibration points Point feature class that stores route measures 1 1 M Centerline sequence Key table for M-N relationship between Centerline and Route M M Centerline Line feature class that stores route geometry 1

  18. Bottom Line • Roads and Highways requires data migration • Migration approach requires modeling and ETL • Understand the data model • http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Data_in_the_ALRS/02230000000r000000/ • Esri Transportation Practice Team has staff that can support (contract work) • Trial Data Set can be used for evaluation
