Possession • Use an apostrophe plus (-s)to show the possessive form of a singular noun, even if the singular noun already ends in (-s): • EX: Kobe Bryant’s five championship rings/My friend’s car/Thomas’s computer • 2. Use an Apostrophe without (-s) for Possessives of most plural nouns. To form the possessive of a plural noun that ends in (-s), add an apostrophe. • EX: The boys’ basketballs/The students’ projects • 3. If the plural noun does not end in (-s), add an apostrophe plus (-s): • EX: The children’s books • 4. Use an Apostrophe with (-s) When two or more nouns possess the same thing • EX: Ben and Jerry’s ice cream shop/Bobby’s and Whitney’s daughter.
Possession (Con’t) • 5. Never use an Apostrophe with Possessive Pronouns • EX: Yours/His/Hers/Ours/Theirs • 6. Add the apostrophe plus (-s)to form the possessive of some indefinite pronouns: • EX: Anyone’s textbook/Somebody’s homework/One’s English grade. • 7. Don't confuse the contraction it's("it is") with the possessive pronoun its: • EX: It’s the first day of classes vs. Our dog has escaped from its cage. • Never use an Apostrophe to plural forms of nouns like dates and acronyms, and family names. • EX: The Johnsons have sold all the CDs from the 90s.
Contractions • Use an Apostrophe to show the omission of letters in a Contraction. • I’m (I am) • He’s (He is) • They’re (They are) • It’s (It is) • Aren’t (Are not)
Plural forms • To avoid confusion, you may occasionally need to use apostrophes to indicate the plural forms of certain letters and expressions that are not commonly found in the plural form: • EX: Keep up on your p’s and q’s/Do what I say with no if’s, and’s, or but’s
