  1. Get your field notes First: Look at your question and then look at your primary sources to see how they answer your question. This answer will be your THESIS. Question: What do primary sources show about religion during the Mauryan Empire? THESIS: Primary sources show that Buddhism spread rapidly during Ashoka’s reign. Question: What do primary sources show about weaponry during the Shang Dynasty? THESIS: Primary sources show that using bronze to make weapons allowed the Shang to stay in power for more than 500 years.

  2. Next: Write your paragraphs.One paragraph for each primary source. • Write a couple of sentences giving context or background. (5 w’s) • Write a sentence or two describing the primary source so the reader can get a picture of it in his/her mind. • What is is made of? • At the top, on the bottom, to the right/left, in the middle. • Colors? Shapes? • Write a couple of sentences explaining how the artifact supports your thesis. • Write a couple of sentences telling what social science(s) it relates to (PIGCHASE) and why.
