GettingStarted • Familiarize yourself with the student’s basic knowledge and learning styles by reviewing the application information provided to you – email laura.tolin@texmed.org if you did not receive this! • Involve office staff in developing the student’s agenda and make sure “office space” is allocated • Make sure you introduce the student to office staff and your partners

GettingStarted • Publicize/post notices in the reception area that you are mentoring a medical student • Review the criteria that need to be met in order for the student to receive credit (Baylor, TAMUHSC, and UTMB offer credit) • Consider developing a “learning contract” with the student • Discuss policy, ground rules, dress code, etc. with your student – and review your expectations for this experience • Know that you can request proofof liability insurance which is provided by each student’s school • Review your office procedures and patient care guidelines (refer to the full student orientation checklist for more – sent to you prior to this call)

During Preceptorship • Inform your patients that you are teaching a student; ask for permission before bringing into examining room • If the patient refuses student contact, have other activities planned for the student to do (videos, articles, research a case, or other colleagues to spend time with) • Make sure your student is familiar with HIPAA • Be realistic about how much you attempt to teach and how much you expect the student to learn!

Dr. Walker: What challenges have you run into with students over the years, and how have you handled them? Dr. Snodgrass: What do you think is most important for students to get out of this program/what do most students want who come into GIMSPP?
