Introduction to Norse myths • When the Vikings came to pillage Britain, they had their own *pagan religion. • Vikings liked to gather round fires and tell stories about their Gods and Goddesses in poems known as sagas! • The main God for all Vikings was Odin who was the father of all the other Gods *Pagan means one who believes in many Gods

  4. Thor, The God of Thunder In the Norse's pagan religion Thor was the God of thunder. Thor has a very symbolic hammer , made by dwarves. He named it Mjolnir or ‘The Destroyer’. People pictured Thor as a muscular man with red hair and a red beard. Thor had a magic belt that could double his immense strength. Thors greatest enemy is the world serpent who lives in the water around Midgard, the earth.

  5. Theworldserpent One of Thor’s most dreaded enemies was the world serpent. Below is an old Norse myth on Thor and the serpent: Thor decided to go on a quest to vanquish the evil world serpent. So disguised as a fisherman, Thor joined the giant Hymir in his boat. With the head of an ox as bait Thor caught the beast on his fishing line. His plan was to kill the serpent with one giant swing of his hammer. However Hymir got scared and cut Thors line freeing the serpent to cause chaos in the world again!

  6. Links with today There are many modern links between Vikings and the modern day. Here are some of them: Most days of the week are named after Viking gods like Thursday-Thor day, Friday- Frey day Wednesday- Odin day Also modern stories have been connected with the Vikings such as Lord of the Rings. Gandalf was based upon Odin, The father of the gods. Also in Lord of the Rings middle earth was actually a translation for midgard, the Viking Earth.
