  1. P – 12462 2011-1, 2011-2 TOW TANK FOR TETHERED HYDROFOIL TEAM MEMBERS: Hope Alm (ME) Tim Buckner (ME) William Lentlie (ME) Andres SantizoMatheu (ISE) Shauna Traxler(ME) OBJECTIVE: The objective of the project was to build a small scaled version of tethered hydrofoil to compare with the model simulation provided by DR. Mario Gomes in MATLAB. Teams P12462 goal was to create a tow tank capable of moving a platform at a constant specified speed over the top of a stationary body of water in order to recreate a river flowing through the hydrofoil. PROJECT TIMELINE: Key Customer Needs: Engineer Specifications: AutoCAD Drawing of Selected Design • SELECTED DESIGN: • 3/8 in (9.525 mm) thick, 2” (5.08 cm) Angle iron • 1/4 in (6.350 mm) thick, 2” (5.08 cm) Angle iron • 3/8 in (9.525 mm) thick Plywood • 16 feet (4.8768 m) long 80/20 Aluminum • 3/4 hp (559.27 w) Motor • 1/16 in (1.5875 mm) diameter Aircraft Cable • 6 in (15.24 cm) diameter Pulleys Picture of Actual Tow Tank FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS: 1) Place windows in the tank walls to allow in water visibility. 2)Upgrade the plywood panels (walls) to sheet metal panels or glass panels. 3) Upgrade the plastic liner to a more robust system. 4) Improve rail mounting to tank • ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: • Special thanks to, • DR. Mario Gomes • EPA P3 • Professor Ed Hanzlik • Professor John Wellin • Mechanical Engineer Machine Shop Personnel Team Picture
