  1. A Class Discussion on hell Adult Auditorium Class 7/21/13

  2. Incentives to be a Christian • Rewards – Heaven • Punishment – Hell • Are we doing our best to obey God’s will to receive a reward, or are we doing our best to obey God’s will to avoid punishment?

  3. Hebrews 9:27 • 27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,

  4. Job 7:9 • 9 As the cloud disappears and vanishes away, So he who goes down to the grave does not come up.

  5. Luke 16:22-23 • 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

  6. Luke 16:24-26 • 24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

  7. hades • Class discussion: Is Hades literal or figurative?

  8. Matthew 25:31-33 • 31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

  9. Matthew 25:34-36 • 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

  10. Matthew 25:41-43 • 41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

  11. Matthew 25:46 • 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

  12. misconceptions Satan Rules Hell – Or Does He?

  13. Revelation 20:12-15 • 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

  14. Mark 9:43-44 • 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 44 where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’

  15. Hell as a deterent • We should obey God because we love him, not specifically because of a fear of Hell. • However, the knowledge of how horrible Hell will be does help serve as a deterrent.
