  4. What are College Coaches looking for? • Character • Grades • Athletic Ability • Lacrosse Skill

  5. Team NORCAL Advisory Process Roles: Gary Podesta - Advisor and Player Advocate. Not a researcher of specific colleges for players. Will assist with player profile development and college coach communications Matt Skiba – Player Advocate Bill Glazier-Player Advocate, assist with HUDL process for profile and highlight film development.

  6. Rule Number One • Pick a school you will love even if you never play a game of lacrosse • Career ending injuries happen • Not making the team • Not get enough playing time • Your college years are about FAR more than lacrosse • Academics • Exploring new intellectual interests/frontiers • Study Abroad

  7. SENIORS • Should have college applications in by now • Will send letters to coaches of the teams where players are accepted

  8. JUNIORS • Need to complete on-line recruiting database form • Need to begin researching colleges • Look for academic, social and financial compatibility • Barron's, US News & World Reports, Princeton Review • Develop player profile and highlight reel ASAP • Develop personal cover letter and lacrosse resume • Determine camp and summer lax schedules and share with Coach Podesta • Set up individual counseling session(s) with Coach Podesta • Make contact with college coaches • Be persistent but polite • Do not burn any bridges!

SOPHOMORES • Need to complete on-line recruiting database form • Need to begin researching colleges • Look for academic, social and financial compatibility • Barron's, US News & World Reports, Princeton Review • Develop player profile and highlight reel ASAP • Develop personal cover letter and lacrosse resume • Determine camp and summer lax schedules and share with Coach Podesta • Make contact with college coaches • NCAA coaches are not allowed to initiate contact with Sophs • You may contact them by email and phone

FRESHMAN • FOCUS ON ACADEMICS • Need to begin on the right foot GPA-wise • Can complete on-line recruiting database form • Never too soon to begin researching colleges • Look for academic, social and financial compatibility • Barron's, US News & World Reports, Princeton Review • Begin to develop player profile and highlight reel ASAP • Begin to develop personal cover letter and lacrosse resume • Determine camp and summer lax schedules and share with Coach Podesta • Make contact with college coaches • NCAA coaches are not allowed to initiate contact with Frosh • You may contact them by email and phone

  13. Timeline for Recruiting • All Division 1 programs are selecting 2014 class,. • Most top tier Div 1 teams have their 2013 Class complete. May have opportunities to impress • MCLA/Club Schools actively encouraging 2012 admitted class applicants • D 2/3 Schools identifying 2012 and 2013 classes

The Recruitment Process • NCAA Registration • Registering with NCAA clearinghouse NCAA Clearinghouse • Register and receive a clearinghouse nu • Coach/Recruiter Contact • Camps/Tournaments • Ongoing Communications • The On-Campus Visit • official vsunofficial • The Decision to ‘Commit’ or Apply Early Decision. Early Action.

  15. What Does “Commit” Mean? • Informing a program you would enroll there upon being admitted. • Divisions 1 & 2- National Letter of Intent • If receiving lacrosse scholarship money • Committing to the Academic Process • Ivy League, Academies

Scholarships • Each D1 school allowed 12.69 scholarships for the program, per year (out of 45 on the roster) • Each D2 school allowed 10.4 scholarships for the program, per year. • D3 and Ivy League and MCLA - no scholarships allowed • Most D1 players get partial scholarships • Scholarships are renewed yearly

West Coast Lacrosse • Total MCLA Teams • 10 Conferences • 2 Divisions • 16 Team National Tournament • Western Collegiate Lacrosse League • Division 1: California, Cal Poly, Chico, Santa Clara, Sonoma St, Stanford, UC Davis • Division 2: Humboldt St, Nevada, Pacific, San Jose State, St Mary’s, UC Merced, UC Santa Cruz

Recruiting Lessons Learned • A program needs 10-12 recruits per year to keep the team going • Influence with admissions varies from school to school, level to level. • In Div. 2 & 3- may have the most influence since potential enrollment has more influence on who is admitted. • Possibly more influence in Early Decision than Regular Decision • 50% of kids proposed by an athletic coach may be rejected (Haverford example) • Don’t make the coach look badly to admissions! • The majority of California kids must be admitted primarily on their academic record
