Space Travel • First stage , sending robotic spacecraft • When that was a success humans were sent • Moon was the first target • First man to go to the moon was Neil Armstrong • One of the greatest success was the Canadarm • reward for space travel was the spinoff technology that we use for our daily lives like Frozen-dried food, high tech running shoes, bicycle helmets, cold weather clothing and light sportswear

Risks Of Space Travel • Biggest risk Equipment Failure • Another risk bone and muscle loss • Asteroids are another risk for astronauts and there spacecraft • Over a million pieces of “Space junk” • Space shuttle holds up to 750 000kg of explosive fuel • the most devastating crash in the history of NASA happened on February,1,2003 it was the Columbia crash Did you know.. In space an apple sized metal ball would crash with the explosive force of 2 dozen sticks of dynamite.

  4. Medical Risks • There are also many medical risks by going to space • Bone and Muscle loss • Hearing Loss • Puffy – head bird – legs syndrome • Physiological effect

New ideas • NASA’s top 2 concept space transporter are Space elevator, Space sled • Space elevator worth 5-8 billion dollars • space elevator’s cable connects from the northpole to the atmosphere • cables length 36 000 km long altitude • cost $200 per 5 hour ride • would connect with a laser beam from earth

  7. new ideas (cont.) • Space sled estimated to be $100 per launch • Would use a slingshot • reach maximum speed of 1000 km/h • would use a 300+ ton rock • reduce fuel to Orbit by 40% NASA’s idea of the space sled
