  3. Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse Lilly loves school. She loves Mr. Slinger, her Kindergarten Teacher, and the light-bulb lab where she draws and writes creative things. That is until…. Mr. Slinger takes away her new purple plastic purse, her movie star glasses, and her three shiny coins. Now Lilly is furious!

  4. Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse Great for discussions for real life problem solving and anger management. Collaborative beginning, middle, and end written story summaries. Students write notes of advice to Lilly on how she could have handled the situation differently.

  5. Chrysanthemum Chrysanthemum believes her name is practically perfect! That is until she goes to school and her “friends” make fun of it. And then she’s perfectly miserable.. Until her music teacher, Delphinium restores her happiness and teaches her friends a subtle lesson in friendliness.

  7. Lilly’s Big Day When Mr. Slinger announces his engagement, Lilly is just sure that she will be the best flower girl ever. When Mr. Slinger asks her to be the flower girl’s assistant, she struggles with how to deal with disappointment. Ultimately she saves the BIG day.

  8. Lilly’s Big Day One more book about Lilly to add to a character study and comparison. Great for a discussion on how to handle disappointment. Students draw a picture walk with beginning, middle, end of the story (independently). Students can write about BIG DAYS that they have had in their lives.

  9. Julius, Baby of the World Lilly is not too fond of her new baby brother, Julius… She tries all kind of nasty tricks to get rid of him, but it only takes one unkind word from someone else about Julius to make Lilly rethink her affections.

By now, students are ready to choose one Henkes book to write or draw their favorite things about. Older students can write a review of a Henkes book.

  11. Chester’s Way • Chester and Wendell have everything figured out…how to play, dress, eat, and well, just about everything… • Then Lilly moves in. Lilly shakes things up for the boys in the neighborhood. • Eventually the boys come around to Lilly's way of thinking... • or does she change her ways?

  13. Weekend With Wendell’s When Wendell comes to stay at Sophie's house, she secretly wishes he would go home soon. Wendell is bossy, wild, and down right rude. However, it's not too long before Sophie turns the tables, and Wendell learns a lesson in fairness and friendship.

  15. Owen Despite his nosy neighbor’s uninvited advice, Owen’s parents would like to support his need to keep his favorite blanket when he starts school… When the big day arrives a creative solution is found!

  16. Owen Good for class discussion on fear and comfort. Students can share their personal stories of perseverance and creative problem solving. Project Linus- Make fleece blankets to give to people who need to feel the comfort of their community.

  17. Sheila Rae, the Brave Sheila Rae is just a little too brave. When she finds herself in a sticky situation… It is her little sister Louise that leads her to safety.
