  2. Format! • Use Times New Roman 12 • Double space • Insert page number starting at the second page. • Use third person (no I’s me’s or we’s) • Always indent the first line of a paragraph • Use appropriate heading

  3. The Content • Always use quotation marks and credit who wrote anything you copy. • Quotes must have a sub and verb outside the quotation marks (quotes can’t stand alone). • Use transitions in all paragraphs. They keep things smooth • Use the same tense throughout the essay. If you start using past tense you cannot shift to present.

  4. Content Cont’d • Be authoritative- do not use think, maybe, or apologize • This is a formal writing assignment therefore contractions may not be used.

  5. Intro. Paragraph • First line should be a hook (something to get the reader interested). • Do not start with a question. • Following the hook should be sentences leading to the thesis. • Names work, author, and topic. • Thesis- states what you will be discussing in your essay. • It will include what each paragraph will cover but will not give too much away.

  6. ABC’s of the Body • Each body paragraph will have an A, B, & C • A- assertion – In “The Most Dangerous Game,” Zaroff is an example of evil. • B- Back it Up- evidence which means quotes • C- Commentary- your explanation

  7. Conclusion • Restates Topic • Summarizes body paragraphs • Restates Thesis – puts it in new words

  8. Your options • Your prompt, how do the choices of characters in the playdetermine Rome’s and Juliet’s fate?

  9. Assertion & Evidence • The first choice that one of our characters makes that leads to his/her death is Romeo’s choice to kill Tybalt. • Romeo declares to Tybalt after Mercutio’s death, “You or I or both must go with him” (3.1.122).

Commentary • Commentary 1 • If Romeo had not chosen to kill Tybalt, he would never have been banished. • Commentary 2 • If he had not been banished, he would never have missed a letter from Friar Lawrence explaining Juliet was only sleeping. • Commentary 3 • Because he did not receive his letter, Romeo believed Juliet was dead and killed himself. • Conclusion • Therefore, Romeo’s choice to kill Tybalt leads to his death.
