What is Perspective? • Perspective has been described as the way that an object appears to the eye, and not only the human eye, here we have the eye of the camera which must then translate to a perspective both from the photographer and as seen by the viewer
Perspectives in Photography • Other terms used are angle, point of view, viewpoint • Definition of Perspective: a warping or transformation of an object and its surrounding area that differs significantly from what the object would look like from a normal point of view
Different types of perspectives • One-Point Perspective (linear, eye level) • Two-Point Perspective (angular, eye level, fish eye, wide angle) • Three-Point Perspective (worm’s eye, bird’s eye)
One-Point Perspective (Linear Perspective, Eye level) One point perspective is defined as a straight on view with only one vanishing point, hence the term one point perspective. Parallel lines converge on one point in the distance known as the vanishing point. Vanishing Point: the appearance of a point on the horizon at which parallel lines converge
Two-Point Perspective (Angular Perspective) Two-point perspectives differ from one-point perspectives in their use of a second vanishing point If you are at an angle to it, you'll use two point perspective, which is also called “angular perspective” for this reason.
Three-Point Perspective (worms eye & bird’s eye) Three point perspective for photo composition is achieved when you are at a low or high angle from the subject. It creates a slight vertigo effect because of the converging verticals, yet at the same time you have the other two side point perspective to add greater depth to the picture
Worm’s eye Viewpoint Definition: an outlook from very close range, but from an inferior or menial position What the worm’s eye view can do in photographs: This can serve to make the subject appear tall and imposing
Bird’s eye View A bird’s-eye view is an elevated view of an object from above, with a perspective as though the observer were a bird What can the view point do in a photograph? It can give a sense of vulnerability as the high angle reduces man's comparative size to the world, or to establish a setting. The psychological effect of a bird's-eye view is to make the subject appear smaller and, by association, weaker or more subdued
Fish eye Definition: Of or being a wide-angle photographic lens that covers an angle of about 180°, producing a circular image with exaggerated foreshortening in the center and increasing distortion toward the periphery. What fisheye view can do in photos: Show you subject relative to their surroundings. It produces highly distorted images They are often used by photographers shooting broad landscapes to suggest the curve of the Earth. Not all subjects will have the same effect with the fish eye lenses. An ideal use of fish eye lenses is when photographing tall buildings or trees. Using this lens for shooting your pets can result in some really funny and adorable captures

Today: Practice Perspectives • Photograph two different examples of the following: • One point perspective • Two point perspective • Bird’s Eye • Worm’s Eye (looking up towards sky) • Worm’s Eye (laying on ground at eye level) • **You will put these in a contact sheet and turn in for participation points in class. Must have 10 total examples by tomorrow.
