Before a Wildfire • design and landscape your home with wildfires in mind • use fire-resistant materials for roofing and  exterior • plant fire-resistant shrubs and trees • regularly clean roof and gutters • inspect chimneys at least twice a year • use mesh screen (1-8 inch) beneath porches, decks, floor areas, and underneath your house • install fire detectors on every level of your  house • teach family members to use fire extinguishers • make sure they know where it is kept • follow local fire burning laws

  5. If you see a wildfire • If you see a wildfire, call 911 • don’t assume that someone has already called • describe location of the fire, speak slowly and clearly, answer any question asked by dispatch

  6. Evacuation • If you evacuate, do so immediately • take your disaster supply kit • lock you home • choose route away from the fire hazard • Make sure you tell someone • when you left and where you are going

Evacuation Cont. • If you’re not ordered to evacuate • have time to prepare your home • FEMA recommended actions include • arrange temporary housing at a friend or relative’s house outside threatened area • wear protective clothing when outside • gather fire tools • rake • axe • handsaw / chainsaw • bucket • turn off any natural gas • fill any tubs & leave sprinklers running • place valuables that will not be ruined by water in pool or pond • move furniture to center of house • turn on outside lights and leave a light on outside

Shelters • Go to local designated shelter if • you have been evacuated • you feel your house is unsafe to return to • text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter • If you are in need of medical attention call  911 or seek help immediately • Emergency services may be backed up

  10. “Fire Watch” • Maintain “fire watch” for several hours following fire • re-check for smokes and sparks throughout house

  11. Returning Home • If a building inspector places color-coded sign on your houses • do not enter it until you get more information • If you must leave your home, ask someone you trust to watch your property in your absence. • Avoid downed power lines • Watch for ash pits and mark them for safety • Watch animals closely • When cleaning-up wear • masks • leather gloves • heavy soled shoes
