  2. What is SmartPORT? • SmartPORT is a user friendly interface that enables the user to capture records directly into Unicorn. • It is based on the Z39.50 client. Diane Tough

  3. Z39.50? • Z39.50 is a protocol that translated commands back and forth between the local system and the external database provider. • This enables the user to search different external databases using the same commands Diane Tough

  4. What can SmartPORT do? • Capture a new bibliographic record for acquisitions. • Capture a complete cataloguing record and replace an existing brief record. • Capture a new or more complete authority record. Diane Tough

  5. Which databases? • OCLC • RLIN • CURL • Others – check with SIRSI Diane Tough

  6. Configuration of SmartPORT • Requires OPAC manager training. • Necessary to have agreements with required databases. • Needs gateway elements and destinations to the relevant databases. Diane Tough

  8. Connecting to SmartPORT • Click on the search source wizard • You can configure as many servers as you want. Select the relevant server. Diane Tough

  11. Search SmartPORT • Enter your search in the search window. • Search or browse? • Use the icons on the right hand side to choose the index you want to search. • Hit List window displays results • Use view record icon for record Diane Tough

  15. Remember • Remember your own brief record must be in edit mode before downloading. • If using OCLC post holding before downloading Diane Tough

  16. Pre-loading records • When you are sure you have chosen the correct record, use the capture icon. • Make sure the correct record is in edit mode in Unicorn. Diane Tough

  17. Loading records • Default settings will appear. Accept or change as necessary. Diane Tough

  19. Finishing Touches • Remember to change classification scheme and call numbers to local system. • Change format if you have different local formats. • Remember to save record after loading! Diane Tough
