  1. Warm wishes on ‘Gudhi Padwa’ & Ugadi

  2. Significance • Gudhi Padva & Ugadi are celebrations of the new year, former in Maharashtra & latter in AP & Karnataka • Gudhi is also called as Brahma Dhwaja, the flag of the Creator, marking the day of the beginning of the universe • Ugadi means: Yuga + Aadi (Beginning of time cycle)

  3. Measurement of time in Vedic Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) • In performing any Vedic rites, the place (‘Desha’) where the rites are being performed is described in the Mantras • Also, the time (‘Kaala’) at which it is being performed are mentioned in the chants • The ancient text of ‘Shree Soorya Siddhant’ describes the time we are in & how much has already passed by after the creation • See some interesting details about this measurement in the following slides • By the way, modern science puts the life of the universe currently between 13.5 to 20 Billion years. According to the Surya Siddhant, as you will see the arithmetic at the end of this presentation, it is close to 155.5 Billion years. • Hopefully, science should reach there soon !!

  4. The Soorya Siddhant According to the Soorya Siddhant: • Creation of universe lasts 100 years of the Creator (Brahma) & then again goes through the phase of recreation • 1 such day (& night each) consists of 1000 yuga cycles • Each yuga cycle (‘Mahayuga’) consists of 4 yugas of the following duration measured in earth years: • Krita yuga: 1,728,000 • Treta yuga: 1,296,000 • Dwapar yuga: 864,000 • Kali yuga: 432,000 (we are in !!) • Total 4,320,000

  5. How long is this day in earth years? • 1000 such yuga cycles would mean 4,320,000,000 earth years • These 4,320,000,000 years have been grouped in 14 ‘Manvantaras’ each consisting of 71 yuga cycles & 1 krita yuga • Thus, each Manvantara consists of 308,448,000 earth years

  6. Where are we in time ? • 50 years (of the Creator) of this creation are already over, we have entered the 51st year • Within that year we are in the first month & its first fortnight & its first day • Of the 14 such Manvantaras of this day, we are currently in the 7th such Manvantara titled ‘Vaivaswat’. Out of this Manvantara, 27 Mahayugas are already over • We are now in the 28th Mahayuga out of the total 71 in each such Manvantara • Within this Mahayuga, the three yugas are over and now we are in the fourth yuga, the Kali Yuga • We are now entering the 5,110th year of the Kali Yuga

  7. This year .. • This year’s name is ‘Sarvadhari’ & is 1930th year within the ‘Shalivahana Shaka (Era)’, named after the king Shalivahana, who ruled from the town Paithan in Maharashtra • The era of the earlier 3,179 years of the Kaliyuga is broken down as follows: • The era of King Yudhishthir (the famous Pandava) who ruled in Indraprastha (Delhi) lasted 3,044 years • The era of King Vikram who ruled in Ujjain lasted 135 years • The Shalivahan Era is expected to continue for total 18,000 years of which 1929 are over • In some parts of India, King Vikram’s era is still reckoned according to which we have ushered into 2065th (1930 + 135) Vikram Samvat during last Deepavali (2007) • Vikram Samvat is recognized from Deepavali & Shalivahana Shaka from Gudhi Padva day

  8. Thus, how many earth years have passed by from the day of Creation? • 50 years: 50 X 360 X 2 X 4,320,000,000 = 155,520,000,000,000 (multiplication by 2 for day & night each) • In addition, of the first day of the 51st year, 6 Manvantaras of 308,448,000 each are over = 1,850,688,000 • Further, in the 7th Manvantara, we have already completed 27 Mahayugas of 4,320,000 each = 116,640,000 • Also, in the 28th Mahayuga, the three yugas have been completed = 1,728,000+1,296,000 + 864,000 = 3,888,000

  9. How many years are over? • In addition, in this Kaliyuga 5,109 years are over • Thus, in all approximately following years are over since creation • 155,520,000,000,000 + 1,850,688,000 + 116,640,000 + 3,888,000 + 5,109 = 155,521,971,221,109

  10. Warm wishes for the new year!!Perhaps,155,521,971,221,110th year of the Universe !!
