Internet 2 • With the leadership of Vice President Gore the US Federal Government sponsors the Next Generation Internet Initiative. • Significant resources were channeled, mainly through the National Science Foundation, to support connectivity among National Laboratories and large research universities

  6. As part of the Next Generation Internet Initiative, 34 major research universities formed a non-profit corporation to run a high capacity network...

  7. Today, UCAID is a non profit consortium of more than 200 universities working with government and industry in the development of tomorrows Internet technologies and applications. http://www.internet2.edu

  9. In other countries… • Most developed countries have formed non profit organizations for the operation of advanced education and research networks National Research and Education Networks

  10. Internet 2 in México… On April 8th, 1999 a non-profit private corporation was formed to implement and fund the network Corporación Universitaria para el Desarrollo de Internet, A.C.

  11. CUDI´s main objectives are: • To deploy and operate an advanced technology network for the research and higher education community • To develop advanced applications • To promote the transfer of new services and applications to commercial Internet

  12. CUDI membership has reached 140 universities and research institutions…

  13. Membership • That comprise: • >80% of higher education enrollment • 1.7 million students • 120,000 computers with access • >90% of researchers in the National Research System

University of California College Prep Online (UCCP) & Monterey Institute for Technology and Education prepare students for higher education through the development and delivery of online courses, counseling resources, and academic support services. • National Repository of On line Courses (NROC)

  33. Education Challenges in California • 48% of elementary students (K-6) in the state of California are Latino (85% of Mexican origin) • 25% of students in K-12 are English Language Learners. (80% speak Spanish) • 46% High School drop out rate in California. • 60% among Latinos • High Mobility rate • Teachers are not well prepared to address ELL’s needs. • Approximately 40% of 9th grade students taking Algebra this academic year (2005-06) will have to repeat the course. Education Challenge… • Translated versions in Spanish will benefit English Language learners • Teachers will use content as supplementary material • Students can have access to the content 24/7 as study material • Assist students to be better prepared prior to entering a University • Take mathematics courses online to fulfill prerequisites prior to entering college and ensure that they are prepared for University work. • Create learning objects so that University faculty use it as supplemental material
