  2. What is an Article? An article works like an adjective. Like adjectives, articles modify nouns.

  3. English has two articles. • the = definite article *Used to refer to specific nouns • a/an = indefinite article *Used to refer to non-specific nouns

  4. Examples: Let have a drink. The bear ate Jim. The bear, is referring to a specific bear. I’m talking about only the bear that ate Jim. • I’m not referring to any specific object or noun. • I could be talking about any drink or kind of drink in the world.

  5. More Examples: I want an apple. The dog swiped the pizza from the table. I’m only referring to that dog which stole the pizza. I’m talking about a specific dog, not just any dog. • What kind of apple am I talking about? No specific apple is being referred to. I could be talking about any apple.

  6. A and An • A toy • A car • An elephant • An apple • An hour What sound begins the next word? Use “a” if the noun being modified beings with a consonant. Use “an” if the noun being modified begins with a vowel or a silent “h.”

  7. If the noun is modified by an adjective: • A spoiled egg • A rotten tomato • An alternate universe • An unforgettable meal Exception: A European Country Yer-opean Choose “a” because of the consonant yuhsound. Your choice between “a” and “an” depend on the sound of the adjective that comes right after the article.

  8. Indefinite articles refer to membership in a group. • I am an American. • I am a member of the large group known as Americans. • She is a teacher. • She belongs to a group known as teachers.

Except for– The United States, The Netherlands • Names of Cities, towns, or states • Names of Streets • Names of continents – Europe, Asia, Africa The signals that a noun is definite, and that it refers to a particular member of a group. Sometimes however, we need to leave out the. Do not use the before:

  11. The or A/an He spilled the milk all over the floor. -Refers to some specific milk. Maybe the milk that you intended to bake with today. He spilled milk all over the floor. -Refers to any milk. Sometimes we can omit the articleentirely.
