  3. Reflecting on Odysseus’ character, list the characteristics of an epic hero?

  4. Epic Hero • Larger than life character in an epic • Epic- a long narrative poem about important events in the history or folklore of a culture. • Demonstrate traits valued by the society

  5. Character Traits of Epic Hero: • Character’s traits are developed by what he or she says in narration or dialogue • Here, Odysseus shows courage and leadership: Now, by the gods, I drove my big hand spike Deep in the embers, charring it again, And cheered my men along with battle talk To keep their courage up; no quitting now.

  7. medias res • Latin phrase, “in the middle of things” • Many epics begin in medias res • Major events occurred before events in the poem begin • Often, the hero’s adventures are recounted in flashback • Flashback- a scene that interrupts a narrative(story) to relate earlier events

Historical and Cultural Context • H&CC-of a work is the backdrop of details of the time and place in which the work is set or in which it was written. • Details include: specific events, beliefs, and customs • When reading a story from another time and culture, usebackground and prior knowledge to analyze the influence of the H&CC • H&CC- the themes and issuesimportant at that time and place.
