  1. Calciphylaxis Caleb Perkins John Pistotnik www2.kumc.edu

  2. Description of disease • A rare skin disease characterized by calcification of arterioles and subcutaneous necrosis. • Large amounts of salts and calcium deposit into the arteries and tissues. • The skin turns black due to skin necrosis (tissue destruction).

  3. Affected Layers • Subcutaneous and cutaneous layers • Affects the dermis by turning the skin black due to loss of blood supply • Affects the hypodermis by hyperplasia (enlargement of organs or tissues due to an increase in reproduction of cells)

  4. Signs/Symptoms • Purple colored mottling • Bleeding • Blood-filled blisters • Skin turns black • Purple lesions

  5. Cause of disease • High deposits of serum calcium and phosphate • Lack of vitamin D • Renal failure • Risk factors include: obesity, diabetes, Caucasian race, and female gender

  6. Cure of disease • The best treatment for Calciphylaxis is not yet clear • Normalize calcium and phosphate levels and control the hyperphosphatemia associated with renal failure. • Parathyroidectomyand hyperbaric therapy

  7. Worst Case Scenario • Death caused by calcification of the arteries and death of the skin

  8. Fun Facts • It is more common in women than in men, in obese patients compared to those of normal weight • Bryant and White first reported it in association with uremia in 1898
