  10. Science is… • Creative • Unbiased observations • Unbiased: free from prejudice or favoritism • Fact vs. opinion • Developing theories through experimentation (pseudoscience: astrology)

  11. Science is...(continued) • Expanding scientific knowledge • Challenging accepted theories • Testing Claims • Undergoes peer review • Uses Latin and the Metric System

  12. Physical Science • Any of the sciences, such as physics, chemistry, astronomy, and geology, that study characteristics of non-living things • Read more: http://www.answers.com/topic/physical-science#ixzz25hevqIga

  13. Scientific Method: What scientists do! • Ask a Question/determine a purpose • Comes from observing • Form a hypothesis=educated guess • Collect data

  14. Control group=the group not receiving the factor being tested, nothing is done to this group • Independent variable=one part of an experiment that can change, determines the outcome • Dependent variable= factor being measured in an experiment • Analyze the Data Graphs, tables, charts, etc. • Report Conclusion

  15. What do scientists do? • Gather • Reason • Communicate

  16. Science vs. Engineers

  17. Science and Engineering Love Models! • Explain things that we can’t see • Allow for us to test hypothesizes • Are not perfect representations Average

  18. Communicate through Argumentation:Evidence vs. Claim • Claim: a statement that answers the question • Evidence: scientific data that supports the claim
