  2. Description • Lasted 400 years • One of the greatest period in history of China • People of China call themselves “People of Han” • Founded by Liu clan • After the Qin Dynasty and before the Three Kingdoms • Han ethnic group established itself as the core nation of China

  3. Western Han Dynasty • Followed Qin Dynasty • 226 BCE – 9 CE • First Period of Han Dynasty • Established during the Warring States Period • Ended by rebellion of Wang Mang • Chang’an as the capital • Founded by Liu Bang

  4. 206 BCE - 9 CE Founded by Liu Xiu Luoyang as the capital Followed Xin Dynasty(9-24) Later Han Dynasty Ended with Capoi proclaiming himself emperor Eastern Han Dynasty

  5. Culture • Buddhism arrived in China • Confucianism became the philosophy-cum-religion • Taoism came into being • Government policies were taken from Confucianism

  6. Politics and Economics • Liu Band abolished harsh laws and enacted more human policies • Introduction of the Feudal States • Development of the Silk Road • China’s prosperity rose • Improvement in paper making • Pottery object found its way in daily life

  7. Decline • Conflict in ruling class followed peasant uprising • In 184 Taoist army rose in revolt weakening the government • Emperor Dongzhou was assassinated due to his ruthlessness • In 220 the last emperor of Han Dynasty abdicated in favor of Caopi who proclaimed himself emperor in 220
