  3. 3 They’re Everywhere • GMOs account for 60-70% of food products in America (Charman 76) • “Unless you consciously act to avoid GM foods, you are almost certainly eating them every day” (Charman 76)

  4. 4 The Controversy • Benefits: • High Crop Yield, • Can be planted in Depleted Soil • Use less chemicals • Negatives • Unknown Health Effects • Hard to control

  5. 5 Testing and Labeling could generate a less concerning and more useful GMOs.

  6. 6 High Crop Yield • Not only growing more ,but growing faster • Growing World Population • “approximately 1.5 billion more people in the next twenty years” ( Jefferson 33)

  7. 7 Grown in Depleted Soil • Genes are altered so they can grow in nutrient depleted soil • Help third world countries • “over 800 are chronically or severely malnourished” ( Jefferson 33)

  8. 8 Use Less Chemicals • Desirable characteristics added to plants • “natural soil bacterium that kills certain insects” (Charman 76) • Using Pesticides • Run off into water • Threatening to farmers

  9. 9 Unknown Safety: Allergens • Genes taken from all different types of plants and animals • Undetectable to Public

  10. 10 Dangers to Environment • Decreasing Biodiversty • Effects cannot be reversed • Spread quickly

  11. 11 Pharmaceutical and Industrial Plants • GMO’s created for veterinary use • Antibiotics, vaccines, plastics and fuels being found • Very new product • “confidential business information” (Charman 80)
