  2. The Precursors of Punk • “If the mainstream of rock seemed rebellious to those on the outside looking in, the sixties losers were rebelling against the rebellion. In the long run, the Punk Precursors’ stance made them heroes. In the short run, they were scum.”

The Precursors of Punk (cont.) • The Velvet Underground and The Stooges (two punk precursor groups) were described as decadent, crude, dark, negative, abrasive, and incompetent. • The Doors, who also spoke to the dark and weird side of rock, opened the door with a commercial hit in 1967 called “Light My Fire”.

  5. The Dawning of Punk • Groups like Iggy Pop & the Stooges, MC5, Alice Cooper, The New York Dolls, Lou Reed and especially David Bowie emerged from glam exponents and the mindset to be annoying and troublesome to people, to be Andy Warhols of Music.
