  3. Background • 1994-2006 • Average of 3 school shootings/year • 42 total school shootings • Post Virginia Tech (2007-2012) • Average of 9 school shootings/year • 54 total school shootings

  4. Recent Events • 2010 • 11 Shootings at Schools • TX: 1 (University of Texas) • 12 Fatalities • TX: 1 (University of Texas) • 2011 • 8 Shootings at Schools • TX: 2 (Worthing HS & Ross Elementary) • 9 Fatalities • TX: 1 (Worthing HS) • 2012 • 8 Shootings at Schools • 38 Fatalities

  5. Survival Mindset • Personal Responsibility = Situational Awareness • Color = State of Mind/Mental Preparation Color Code System White = Unaware Yellow = Relaxed but alert Orange= Something appears wrong Red = Taking action/fight or flight Black = Panic, over reaction, under/no action

Three Step Response • If you are in the building with the shooter: • Get out • Hide out • Take out • If you are in a different building from the shooter: • Stay inside the building • Wait for official notification to leave the building • If you are outdoors apply the following to your situation: • Determine where shots are coming from • Take cover & call 817-735-2600 immediately • Assess situation • Determine escape route

  7. Get Out • Exit the building (If possible) • Find a safe place to go • Call 817-735-2600 to report • Provide location of shooting • Provide description of shooter

  8. Hide Out • When you can’t get out safely • Shooter is in close proximity • You may be visible to the shooter • Follow these steps: • Lock out • Lock doors (If possible) • Barricade doors/Create trip hazards • Lights out • Turn out all lights in the room • Silence cell phones and do not use

  9. Take Out • When shooter will or has entered • Follow these steps: • Plan out • Distractors-Throw items at shooter • Attackers-Take down the shooter • Spread out • Do no cluster together for comfort • More difficult for the shooter

Active Shooter Prevention • Recognize disturbing and disruptive behavior • Longer behavior is ignored the more it will persist and worsen • Make behavior expectations clear of students • Division of Student Affairs • Assist and support students and employees with student issues • If you need direction on dealing with a student, please call • Dr. Trisha Van Duser (817-735-2508) • Emily Mire (817-735-5172) • Can talk to and refer the student to where they need to go • Can refer you who to talk to about an issue with a student

Active Shooter Prevention (Cont.) • CARE Team • Resource for assisting distressed students • Does not take the place of first responders • Call or email if concerned student could be threat to self or others • Don’t ignore little signs: • Texts • Posts on social media outlets • Contact CARE Team: • 817-735-2740 • careteam@unthsc.edu

Culture of Preparedness • Know your surroundings and have a plan • Visit emergency.unthsc.edufor evacuation maps • Figure out where you would go or hide in a building • Provide safety briefing at first department meeting each semester • Discuss and review procedures at safety committee meetings • Think of possible scenarios to keep in a planning mindset • Check and update your Red Alert info each semester
