  8. A computer keyboard looks a lot like a typewriter keyboard. • Most of the keys are • for typing, just like on • a typewriter. • If you type the keys • with letters on them, • they will type as • small letters. • If you hold down the shift key while you press a letter you will get a capital letter. • If you press the Caps Lock key, all the letters will be capitals until you press Caps Lock again

  9. The Desktop Keyboard Keyboards are not all the same. This one is typical:

  10. The Laptop Keyboard Laptop keyboards are also not all the same, but they usually have fewer keys. This probably won’t make a difference for you because most people don’t use the extra keys anyway.

  11. An easy way to type numbers If you only want to type a few numbers at a time, it is easiest to use the number keys across the top of the keyboard, just over the highest row of letters. The keypad on the right is best if you are typing lots and lots of numbers.

  12. Special Keys Keyboards can have a lot of special keys. We will only look at a few of them. ESC (Escape). This key is used in many programs to get out of the program – You have already used it to get out of the large pictures for videos.

  13. More special keys Control (CTRL): Most often, this key is used to do things with the keyboard that you also can do with the mouse. You hold down the CTRL key at the same time you press another key. ALT usually works the same way.

  14. More About Keyboards • There is a lot of material about keyboards and typing in the Supplementary Materials. • You will find videos, typing lessons, and games.
