  1. A BIBLICAL RESPONSE TO THE ABUSE OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

  2. Colossians 1:13-1413For he (i.e. God the Father) has rescued us from the one who rules in the kingdom of darkness, and he has brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son. 14God has purchased our freedom with his blood and has forgiven all our sins.

  3. John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

  4. John 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. John 1:4-5 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it.

  5. John 3:19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

  6. Romans 13:12 So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Ephesians 5:8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light

  7. Acts 26:17-18 I am sending you to them (the Gentiles) to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

  8. POLICE STATISTICS: 2010/11 15 940 reported murders in SA 43 per day

  9. South African Rape Statistics March 28, 2011  According to Rape.co.za, it’s estimated that women born in South Africa have more chance of being raped than learning how to read. The site also quotes a survey that was conducted amongst 1,500 Sowetan school children, in which it was discovered that a quarter of all boys said

  10. that “jackrolling” (their lingo for gang rape) was “fun”. The devastating stats continue – a quarter of South African men who took part in a survery by the Medical Research Council (MRC) admitted to raping someone, it’s estimated that half a million rapes are commited each year in SA.

  11. A study by Interpol shows that South Africa has the highest rate of rape in the world. A woman is raped in South Africa every 17 seconds… The highest increase in attacks has been against children under the age of seven, largely due to the myth that sexual intercourse with a virgin will cure a man of HIV or AIDS.

  12. POLICE STATISTICS: 2010/11 56 272 reported rapes in SA 154 per day

  13. THIS IS ONE OF THE BATTLE-FRONTS IN OUR CONFLICT WITH THE KINGDOM OF DARKNESS

  14. Preface to “My Story” The Bible is filled with exciting and intense stories of love, war, birth, death and miracles. There’s poetry, culture, history and theology. It’s a suspense novel, a book of sociology, a history lesson – all woven around one eternal conflict: GOOD VERSES EVIL

  15. QUESTION: What can we find in God’s word that will give us some direction as to how we are to respond?

  16. Judges 19:1 In those days Israel had no king.

  17. Judges 19:1-21:25 (THE MESSAGE) The old man said, “It’s going to be all right; I’ll take care of you. You aren’t going to spend the night in the town square.” He took them home and fed the donkeys. They washed up and sat down to a good meal.

  18. They were relaxed and enjoying themselves when the men of the city, a gang of local hell-raisers all, surrounded the house and started pounding on the door. They yelled for the owner of the house, the old man, “Bring out the man who came to your house. We want to have sex with him.”

  19. He went out and told them, “No, brothers! Don’t be obscene—this man is my guest. Don’t commit this outrage. Look, my virgin daughter and his concubine are here. I’ll bring them out for you. Abuse them if you must, but don’t do anything so senselessly vile to this man.” … ravish them … abuse them … violate them … do whatever you like to them

  20. But the men wouldn’t listen to him. Finally, the Levite pushed his concubine out the door to them. They raped her repeatedly all night long. Just before dawn they let her go. The woman came back and fell at the door of the house where her master was sleeping. When the sun rose, there she was.

  21. Genesis 1:27-28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

  22. Deuteronomy 24:1-41If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies…

  23. Deuteronomy 22:25-2625But if out in the country a man happens to meet a girl pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26Do nothing to the girl; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders his neighbor.

  24. ‘PROGRESSIVE REVELATION’ So by the time of king Solomon, a woman is greatly respected … Proverbs 31:10-31 … a wife / woman is held up as an example

  25. John 4:2727Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

  26. Luke 7:37-3837When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

  27. Matthew 9:20-2220Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” 22Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment.

  28. Luke 7:12-1412As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. … 13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” 14Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”

  29. Luke 8:1-3The Twelve were with him, 2and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

  30. John 20:17-1817Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

  31. Matthew 28:5-85The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said … go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. … 8So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

  32. Acts 2:17-1817“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, …18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

  33. Acts 8:1212But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

  34. Acts 21:8-98Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven. 9He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.

  35. Romans 16:77Greet Andronicus and Junias, my relatives who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.

  36. Galatians 3:2828There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  37. Ephesians 5:2525Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her Colossians 3:1919Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

  38. Philippians 4:2-32I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. 3Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

  39. 1 Peter 3:77Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

  40. YET NOW AS WE FACE THIS HORROR IN OUR COUNTRY, IT SEEMS THAT TOO MANY MEN KNOW BUT DON’T CARE …

  41. It was morning. Her master got up and opened the door to continue his journey. There she was, his concubine, crumpled in a heap at the door, her hands on the threshold. “Get up,” he said. “Let’s get going.” There was no answer. He lifted her onto his donkey and set out for home.

  42. When he got home he took a knife and dismembered his concubine—cut her into twelve pieces. He sent her, piece by piece, throughout the country of Israel. And he ordered the men he sent out, “Say to every man in Israel: ‘Has such a thing as this ever happened from the time the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until now? Think about it! Talk it over. Do something!’ ”

  43. Difficult to translate: Shouldn’t we speak up and do something about this? Consider it! Take council, and speak up! Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do!

  44. Judges 20:1-3 Then all the People of Israel came out. The congregation met in the presence of God at Mizpah. They were all there, from Dan to Beersheba, as one person! The leaders of all the people, representing all the tribes of Israel, took their places in the gathering of God’s people. … The People of Israel said, “Now tell us. How did this outrageous evil happen?”

  45. There’s a biblical principle here: WHEN GOD SHOWS HIS PEOPLE THAT THERE IS EVIL IN THE LAND, THEY NEED TO BE UNITED IN OPPOSITION AND RESISTANCE

  46. Judges 20:6-7 The Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, spoke: … So I took my concubine, cut up her body, and sent her piece by piece—twelve pieces!—to every part of Israel’s inheritance. This vile and outrageous crime was committed in Israel! So, Israelites, make up your minds. Decide on some action!”

  47. Think about it Don’t just push it from your minds Think about it and bring this horror before God

  48. Talk it over Interact with one another … ladies need to prod the men into facing this tragedy Pretending it’s not there will not make it go away
