  3. Before You Leave • Fill out appropriate paper work in ECS to get registered for coop, intern, or summer course • Cancel housing contract • Check on financial aid requirements • Stop in 101 Marston if going on an internationalexperience

  4. Getting Started • Clarify goals and expectations: yours and the companies • Establish open communication lines • Maintain professional and ethical conduct: use the web, e-mail & phone for business purposes • Network with other students & employees

  5. Actions for Success • Exhibit a winning work ethic • Show initiative • Discover additional responsibilities • Ask questions

  6. Attitudes for Success • Approach menial tasks with a good attitude • Show enthusiasm • "Rise and shine" everyday and on time: few vacations & 40+ hours expected • Adapt to the culture; dress appropriately

  7. Requirements for “S” Grade • Fill out the ISU College of Engineering Employment Information Sheet (this will be emailed to you 1-2 weeks into your work term - supervisor information and your at home work address need to be accurate) • Complete Student Evaluation of Work Experience (we will email you towards the end of your work term to let you know that this needs to be completed) • Both you and your supervisor complete the OPAL assessment survey (we will email you during your work term to give you instructions on how to access your survey information)

  8. Assessment Information • The assessment survey is based on your development of competencies. • The assessment survey is a private on-line developmental tool to be used for professional growth. • Both you and your supervisor will complete the assessment survey. • The assessment surveys are confidential and neither the Engineering Career Services Office nor your advisor will see individual results. • The collective results of all student surveys will be sent to your academic department for curriculum development.

  10. What are Competencies? • Knowledge • Skills/abilities • Understanding • Behavior/motivation Competencies have definitions and key actions. Your actions demonstrate competencies.

  11. Initiative (this is an example) Definition Taking prompt action to accomplish objectives; taking action to achieve goals beyond what is required; being proactive. Key Actions Responds quickly--Takes immediate action when confronted with a problem or when made aware of a situation. Takes independent action--Implements new ideas or potential solutions without prompting; does not wait for others to take action or to request action. Goes above and beyond--Takes action that goes beyond job requirements in order to achieve objectives.

  13. Final Steps • Talk with Employer regarding next work term (Co-op students only) • Update information on ECSOnline and AccessPlus

  14. Keep in Touch with ISU • Forward your ISU email account to ensure communication; or • Continue to use ISUWebMail (Everything you need to fill out for an “S” grade will be emailed to you.
