  1. FIXED INSTALLATIONS FOAM INLETS COMPETENCE STATEMENT 375

  2. AIM To enable a firefighter to use a foam inlet fitted to a building OBJECTIVES 1) Identify a foam inlet point 2) Describe the function of a foam inlet 3) Describe the outlets of a foam inlet system 4) Describe the type of risk covered by foam inlets 5) Deliver a foam supply to a foam inlet

  3. FOAM INLET POINT

  4. FUNCTION • To give access to fire service personnel - • To a system of pipework and pourers - • To allow pre-formed low expansion foam - • To be applied to a fire inside a building - • From outside the building

  5. Pipework Outlets Risk Area Inlet OUTLETS

  6. TYPE OF RISK AREAS • Usually basements • Sometimes ground floor • Areas where flammable liquids present a risk • Such as oil fired boilers • Or liquid fuel stores

  7. DELIVER A FOAM SUPPLYTO A FOAM INLET • 1) Ensure pump is connected to a sufficient water supply • 2) Lay out one line of 70mm hose ending in a foam branch • 3) Unlock foam inlet door and ensure inlet is not defective • 4) Charge hose and induce foam • 5) Once foam is being produced connect into inlet and hold HAZARD!!!! . . . Never allow water onto a flammable liquid fire

  8. QUESTIONS 1) Describe a foam inlet Recessed box - Located at ground floor level of building - Lockable glass panelled door - The words “FOAM INLET” printed on the glass - Fire Service foam inlet inside the box. 2) What is the function of a foam inlet? To give access to fire service personnel - To a system of pipework and pourers - To allow pre-formed low expansion foam - To be applied to a fire inside a building - From outside the building. 3) What is the maximum number of foam outlets per foam inlet? Three. 4) Where are you likely to find the type of risk area which may have a foam inlet installed? Usually basements – Sometimes ground floor – Areas where flammable liquids present a risk – Such as oil fired boilers – Or liquid fuel stores.

  9. QUESTIONS 5) What equipment do you need to supply foam to a foam inlet? One line of 70mm hose ending in a foam branch plus the equipment needed to make foam – Pick up tube and foam concentrate. 6) At what stage should the foam branch be applied to the foam inlet? Charge hose and induce foam. Once foam is being produced connect into inlet and hold. 7) What is the major precaution associated with applying foam to a liquid fuel fire? Never allow water onto a flammable liquid fire.
