  2. Rules when adding on a number line • You add a positive number by moving right. • You add a negative number by moving left. Ex: 2 + - 1 Ex: - 3 + 2 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

  3. Rules of addition • Same Sign Rules • Add and keep the sign • Opposite Sign Rules • Subtract and keep the sign of the largest number

  4. Addition Practice 2 + - 3 3 - 5 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

  5. Addition Practice -8 + 12 2.5 + (-5.3) -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

  6. Subtraction Rules • Change all subtraction problems into addition problems by “adding the opposite” • Then use the addition rules to solve.

  7. Subtraction Practice -2 - 2 -3 - (-5) -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

  8. Subtraction Practice l -2 I - 2 7 - (-5) -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

  9. White Board Practice • The 1st person in each row needs to get supplies for the entire row • The last person in each row will put the supplies away

  10. Assignment • WS 2.2-2.3 • To be determined based on your behavior in class

  11. 2.5 Multiplication of Real Numbers Objectives: -Multiply real numbers using properties of multiplication Your assignment will be based on class behavior!!

  12. Rules of Multiplication • Odd number of negatives = negative answer • Even number of negatives = positive answer

  13. Practice -4(-5) x(x)(x)(-x) 3.2(x)(y)(-y)

  14. Practice - 1(-11) x(2x)(-3x)(-x) -2(b2)(-b3) 8

  15. Assignment • Evens 2-24 (first set) • Odds 1-23 (second set)

  16. 2.2 Addition of Real Numbers2.3 Subtraction of Real NumbersPart 2 Objectives: -add real numbers using a number line or addition rules -Subtract real numbers using a number line or subtraction rules Your assignment will be based on class behavior!!

  17. Rules for addition and subtraction • If there is a minus in the middle (and only the middle) change the middle sign to a plus and the sign that comes after. • If the sign in the middle is a plus then you • Add if the signs are the same • Subtract if the signs are different(keep the sign of the largest number)

  18. Practice • -5 + 8 • -9 – 8 • 5 – 7 • 3 – (-7) • 6 + -4 • -(-10 ) + (-2) • 14 – 26

  20. Terms • Distributive property • Coeficient • Like terms • Constant terms

  21. Terms continued • Simplified expression

  22. Practice • 3(x+3) • -2t( 4+t) • x(x+5)

  23. More Practice • -y(-y2 + y) • 1.3t – 2.1 t • 4(2 – a) – a

  24. Last Practice • -x3 + 2x(x – x2) • -3 + y + 7 • -12y + 5y
