  1. IMPORTANT DATES Sept. 8: Start of our PTO fall fundraiser. Sept. 11 and 12: first Grade DIBELs Testing. Oct. 3: Picture Day Oct. 7: PTO Meeting 6:30 Oct. 10: NO SCHOOL (Professional Day) What a Great Start! The first days of school have flown by as we got to know each other, learn first grade routines and expectations. Your children have such enthusiasm for school. I know we’ll have a great year together! Please contact me when you have questions or concerns. My email is: kcruzan@hoquiam.net. My work phone number is 538-8341. Math: We began work with our math program, Math Expressions, this week. In the first unit, your student will visually represent 1 more and 1 less, practice writing numerals 1-10, visualize 5-groups and extra ones, and learn partners of 2 through 10. Thank you for helping with the homework! I will put a star on the math homework chart for each completed assignment. Remember to have your child write his/her name on homework. This first unit is a review of basic skills and the homework should be fairly simple. Reading: This year as part of our reading series, your first grader will bring copies of decodable books home. Your child will read the book as a homework task. Please keep the books and encourage your first grader to read these books over and over. Rereading will reinforce the sounds and skills and is essential for building fluency which promotes reading comprehension.

  2. Take Home Folders: Please check your student’s red take home folder nightly for completed work, homework, and newsletters. This folder is the primary means of communication between home and school. One side of the folder is marked “Keep At Home”. The other side is marked “Return To School”. Your child will try to put homework in the “return” side and all papers that can stay at home on the “keep” side. Papers may not always end up in the right place though. Please sort through them and send a fairly empty folder back to school each day! SPECIALIST SCHEDULE P.E.— Tuesday and Friday Music—Monday and Thursday Movement—Wednesday Library—Monday PTO Fall Fundraiser This is an easy fundraiser for everyone to do! Families collect addresses of friends and relatives. For each valid address, Emerson School receives $$$! A ONE TIME ONLY mailing will be sent to the addresses with an offer to order magazines, etc., but there is no need to purchase anything. Addresses will not be put on a mailing list or sold to any business. It’s easy, no purchase necessary, and a win for the school! • READING TARGETS • Read Kindergarten sight words • Comprehension Skills: predict outcomes, sequence, draw conclusions, and self- correct. • Read short vowel words with a, i, o • Spell kindergarten sight words • MATH TARGETS • Find partners of number • Draw 1 through 10 objects • Show numbers using 5-groups • Identify and continue patterns
