  1. Energy Moves and Changes 5.5

  2. Make some motions with your hands • Where does the energy come from that makes you move your hands? • Food!

  3. Energy from food is stored in your bodies • The stored energy is used to make your muscles move

  4. Rub your hands together really hard • What do you feel? • Heat!

  5. Heat is another form of energy • When you rub your hands together, some of your energy changes form and becomes heat energy

  6. Energy stored in a battery produces electricity that can make toys move • Electrical energy from the battery powers an electrical motor that operates gears and other parts that make the toy move • Electrical enery changes form in the toy to mechanical energy

  7. Energy moves from one place to another • It usually changes form along the way • People can make energy more useful by directing it to different places or by making devices that change its form

  8. When you sharpen your pencil, the energy from the muscles in your arm makes the crank turn

  9. This is what the inside of a pencil sharpener looks like… • You can see the gears and sharpening knives

  10. The pencil sharpener is a machine that makes the work of sharpening a pencil easier and quicker • Instead of sharpening a pencil with a knife by hand, you use your energy to turn the crank, which transfers the energy through the gears to the little knives inside • As the machine spins, it removes wood from the pencil and puts a point on the lead
