  1. Rational and Irrational Numbers

  2. Rational Numbers • A real number that can be written as: • A fraction or ratio of two integers - • A repeating 0.5757... 1.2 or terminating decimal 0. 45 • An integer - 25 A number must be written in one of these three forms in order to be classified as RATIONAL

  3. Squares • Another example of a RATIONAL number is a perfect square and square root. • When a number is multiplied with itself, the product is the SQUARE of the number. • A square is written with the exponent 2 (9 x 9 = 81) • Perfect Squares are the product of any number multiplied with itself

  4. Table of Perfect Squares

  5. Square Roots * This symbols asks “ what is the square root?” square root symbol • To find the SQUARE ROOT of a number , work backwards and divide the SQUARE by its FACTOR. = 25 = 5 SQUARE SQUARE ROOT (5 is a factor of 25)

  6. Table of Square Roots

  7. Irrational Numbers • A real number that can be written as: • A decimal that does not repeat 0.34332 • A decimal that does not terminate , or end • A number that is not a perfect square * An Irrational Number cannot be written as a ratio of 2 integers
