  3. A well-managed classroom has 3 important components in place: 1. Discipline 2. Procedures 3. Routines

  4. Connections to Discipline, Procedures, and Routines Questions to ask yourself: • Are my standards clear? • Are my expectations clear? • Are my directions clear? Bottom line: It’s often a matter of CLARITY. Don’t trap your students into the game of GUESS WHAT’s ON THE TEACHER’s MIND

  5. Difference between Discipline and Procedures • Discipline concerns how students behave• Procedures concern how things are done• Discipline has penalties and rewards• Procedures have no penalties or rewards

  6. PROCEDURE What the teacher wants done ROUTINE • What the students do automatically

  7. 3 Steps for TeachingProcedures • Explain • Reinforce • Rehearse

  8. Explain State, explain, model, and demonstrate the procedure.

  9. Reinforce Re-teach, rehearse, practice, and reinforce the classroom procedure

  10. Rehearse Rehearse and practice the procedure under your supervision until it becomes a habit or routine

  11. What is a procedure in your life that has become a routine? Use the handout to write out the steps of your routine. How has that procedure become a routine?

  12. Your turn • Lining up to come in school • Procedure for toys at play time • Using math manipulatives • Getting ready to go home • Bathroom procedure • Going to the gym • Journal entry • Snack time • Choosing a center
