In this area water supply is only twice in a week. School didn't have proper storage for water. Though the school has tubewell students were facing problem with drinking water because the ground water in the area is salty. This Water is also not good for cooking, drinking, washing clothes, agriculture etc..

School is located in one of the gruffest areas in Sri Lanka. • Al Azar Muslim Collage at Putlam. This School also located in other gruffest area in Sri Lanka.

  6. Rain water Collecting System (RWCS) We developed RWCS using GI sheets to measure the rain fall in the selected villages. It covers 1 square unit and 6 inches in height. A down pipe was arranged to collect the water from collector to fill the tank. RWCS was placed at an open area near the grade 7 class room in the AlHidaya Tamil Collage and Al Azar Muslim Collage . 500 L RWCS Rain Gauge Meter

  7. Plan of action • Meet the selected village school students and request them to cooperate and measure the rainfall in their area. • Place “Rain Water Collecting System” at their School and demonstrate how to collect data. • Collect the data about rainfall for one month from the schools every Friday via E mail and chat. • Prepare a brochure, conduct campaign and organise exhibition to create awareness among community people.

  8. Quick View Water collected… Recorded Rainfall - May

  9. Rainfall in Srilanka After collecting data from the schools we have conducted research using internet to find information about rainfall and temperature in Srilanka. It helped us to calculate quantity of rainfall available for harvesting

  10. Roof as a Collector We surprised to see good rainfall during all seasons. We also felt that the easy way to harvest the rain water is using the roof as a Collector. We did simple calculation to find quantity Of rainfall available for harvesting with average rainfall of 24.5mm

  11. Roof Roof Guttering Over flow Storage Vessel Outlet Proposed Plan for Rain Water Harvesting

  12. Suggestions • Govt. and NGO should create awareness among community about water conservation methods. • Banks should encourage to develop Rain Water Harvesting by providing loans to construct. • Govt. should encourage people by providing subsidy • Govt. should act as a role model by developing rain water harvesting system (RWHS) for all offices. • Municipality should insist on RWHS for new approval of buildings. • Each individual should feel it as his responsibility to conserve water by RWHS

  13. Outcome of the project • The School Management was highly motivated and very happy with project " Drop of Life". They also funded to install "Rain Water Harvesting System" in the school.
