Resilience Psychological Resilience Ability of a system to sustain itself through change by adaptation and occasional transformation Ability of people to cope and thrive in the face of adversity Social & Ecological Resilience Ability of communities to use their resources to thrive in times of change Community Resilience

Resilience We have strong, resilient and supportive communities where people take responsibility for their own actions and how they affect others ‘We want to encourage dynamism and resilience and further develop a can-do culture.’ ‘Community resilience’ … is key to sustaining local healthcare in remote communities.... a collective and collaborative response within communities to promote independence. Community resilience is about communities and individuals harnessing local resources and expertise to help themselves in an emergency….

  4. Seminar Purpose • Bring together UHI researchers from different backgrounds and perspectives • Share knowledge of theory and practice around resilience • Unpack current policy approaches to resilience and rural communities • Identify common themes/unanswered questions

  5. What Next? • Output – themes and possible research questions • Circulate presentations and notes • Invite delegates to express interest in themes and developing project proposals • Engage with other stakeholders, including communities • Seek funding for proposals
