Restating the obvious: Democracy and political parties Representative democracy needs intermediaries Political parties may not be the only ones but they are unique and indispensable in todays democracy They are the main vehicle for political representation, the main mechanism for the organization of government and the channels for maintaining democratic accountability.

    4. Political parties: What are they? organised groups that are formed with a sole purpose of contesting control over state power and government and directing a countrys development process in line with their own ideological orientations and their policy frameworks as defined in their manifestos. Not everything that glitters therefore is gold!
