  1. Methadone

  2. Names Common: Methadone Chemical name (IUPAC): 6-dimethylamino-4, 4-diphenyl-3 heptan-one Chemical Formula:C21H27NO•HCl Synonyms: Symoron, Heptadon, Methadose, and Dolophine. Street Names: Amidone, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Fizzies, Maria, Pastora, Salvia, Street Methadone, Wafer, Done, Junk, and Dolls.

  3. Classification Drug Classification: Opiate (narcotic) analgesic • Methadone is an analgesic because it reduces pain that the user feels. • It is a narcotic because it makes the user drowsy or induces sleep. • Also, it is an opiate because it is made from natural or synthetic made Opium. Family: Opioid Schedule II • High Potential for abuse • Medical use

  4. History • First Synthesisedin 1939 by the Pharmaceutical laboratories of the I.G. Farbenkonzern. • Scientists had been trying to find a synthetic analgesic drug to be used as a pain killer. • Chemists Eisleb and Schaumann discovered Pethidine, which is an opioid analgesic. • This discovery lead to German Scientists Bockmühl and Ehrhart invented some diphenylmethanesthat acted as analgesics and Methadone was one of them. • It was first used in the United States as an analgesic to treat people with addictions to heroin, opium, and other narcotics by the Eli Lilly and Company in 1947. • Still used in U.S. today for the same treatments .

  5. Production Methadone is made out of: • Hydrogen • Nitric Oxide • Hydrochloric Acid Manufactured in: United States, France, Belgium, and Netherlands. Methadone is synthetically made since it is not found in nature and is produced industrial. Main Manufacturer: Eli Lilly and Company

  6. User Common Users/Abusers: • People in rehab for addictions to opioid drugs • Patients in severe pain from a terminal illness People can get addicted to Methadone after using it to cure their addiction of an illegal drug like heroin. Some Methadone addicts say that they get the same high as they do with heroin and that’s why they switched over. Methadone is obtained by people attending rehab clinics who can get it as a prescription and they either use it for themselves or sell it illegally on the streets.

  7. Affects Ways Methadone is taken: • Medically it is taken by swallowing a pill or a liquid. • Those who do it illegally usually inject it. Injecting gets the user a more concentrated dose and it goes through the blood stream faster. Affects on the brain (if used properly): • Can cure a previous opioid addiction • Improves mental and social health. Affects on the brain (if abused): • Psychological addiction • Reduced attention and awareness

  8. Affects (cont.) Methadone can effect the body because it attaches to organs and the spinal column. If abused for many years, there will be some damage to these body parts. Side effects: sweating, anxiety, nausea, drowsiness, increase in heart rate, shallow breathing, hallucinations, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and fainting. Has high potential for physical and psychological addiction because it is so similar to heroin.

  9. Risks Common psychological effects are: Euphoria, pleasantness, loss of attention, loss of memory, and hallucinations. Common emotional effects are: mood swings, negative attitude towards people around you, wanting more methadone, and depression. Lethal dose=50-100 milligrams

  10. Detection/Consequences Methadone is detected using a urine test. This test can detect Methadone for up to 48 hours after use. Treatment programs are often social groups or rehab. Since most abusers were once in rehab before for opioid addictions, usually going back is enough to kill their Methadone addiction. Consequences if you do not have a prescription: • Up to 20 years of jail time on your first offence • Up to 30 years of jail time on the second offence and a treatment program.
