Quality of seeds and propagating material Legislation implemented as part of EEA (in Icelandic regulation 301/1995) • Council Directive 2002/53/EC of 13 June 2002 on the common catalogue of varieties of agricultural plant species • Council Directive 2002/55/EC of 13 June 2002 on the marketing of vegetable seed • Council Directive 2002/54/EC of 13 June 2002 on the marketing of beet seed • Council Directive 66/402/EEC of 14 June 1966 on the marketing of cereal seed • Council Directive 66/401/EEC of 14 June 1966 on the marketing of fodder plant seed • Council Directive 2002/57/EC of 13 June 2002 on the marketing of seed of oil and fibre plants

Not issued every year. • The Agricultural University issues every year list of recommended varieties of agricultural plants. • Few applications. Minor interest from the seed companies for the small marked in Iceland. The variety must show good performance in cultivation trials in Iceland. • Official Icelandic national list: Recommended varieties not listed in EU’s common catalogues or only there because of Icelandic interest.

Quality of seeds and propagating material Forest reproductive material • There is an accumulated knowledge for decades over provenances suitable for growing in Iceland. • The Icelandic propagative material has not been characterised according to directive 1999/105 (‘source-identified’, ‘selected’, ‘qualified’ and ‘tested’). • Theres is no Icelandic national register of basic material approved for propagation. • Import of some genuses of trees is prohibited into Iceland according to phytosanitary legislation.
