Enhancing Rural Energy Sustainability: A Pico-Hydro Project for Measurable Impact

This project focuses on the identification and formulation of a sustainable pico-hydro initiative for rural areas. It aims to deliver real and measurable impacts while adhering to sustainable development goals. By improving end-use and supply-side energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy, the project targets significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and industrial processes. Despite being small-scale, it is designed to provide additional benefits beyond existing baseline scenarios. Insights from past CDM initiatives will guide implementation, taking into account administrative costs and stakeholder feedback.

  3. Eligible Projects Noted • End-use efficiency improvements • Supply-side energy efficiency improvement • Renewable energy • Fuel switching • Agriculture (reduction of CH4, N2 emissions) • Industrial processes (CO2 from cement, HFCs) • Sinks projects (only afforestation and reforestation)

Notable Experience To Share • Selected project fits well in the sustainable development goals of the country • Project is very small, but real and will result into measurable impacts • Expected result of the project satisfies additionality/incremental benefits in relation to “what is existing” or a baseline

  5. Taking Stock of the additionality issue • Ready reference to technical reports prepared by experts • Adopted the formula computations and concepts • Compared/validated concepts with local conditions • Arrived at the displaced amount of CO2

Some specific issues concerning this project • High administration cost associated with CDM is a given factor and its impact to the project is fully appreciated by most stakeholders by now • Significant learnings were achieved through the CDM initiatives beneficial to the project idea • The sustainable development criteria is the most basic among the requirements by CDM
