  2. Step One – Analyse the Question • Read the question carefully • Underline key dates, words or phrases. • Brainstorm – what areas of evidence should I look at in my answer? • Ask yourself what is the question asking me to do; Explain, Compare or Judge.

  3. Step Two – Plan Your Essay Any essay should always have the following: Introduction • Set your essay in context with 2-3 sentences of background information. • Outline the question which your essay will answer. • Outline the main factors you will consider.

  4. Step Two – Plan Your Essay Main Section • Deal with the main factors in a logical order. • Write a short paragraph for each of your main factors. • Use relevant facts/examples • Spell historical terms/names correctly • Use quotations to illustrate points or to show awareness of differing historical opinions. • Link the evidence for each factor back to the main question.

  5. Step Two – Plan Your Essay Conclusion • Summarise the main points in your answer. • Directly answer the question • Indicate what is the most significant or important evidence which helped you to reach your conclusion.

  6. Other Points to Note: • Do not write in the first person ‘I think’ • Write in paragraphs – do not use sub-headings. • Use your own words as much as possible.
