The 13 Colonies • The 13 colonies were located along the eastern coast of North America. • They were ruled and chartered by the British government. • People came to the 13 colonies mainly for financial reasons or religious reasons. • The colonies were divided into 3 groups: * New England * Middle Colonies * Southern Colonies • When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, it caused the colonies to become independent states. Forming the United States of America. << The 13 stars on the flag represent the 13 colonies. As well as the 13 stripes.

Colonies and When They Were Founded • New England Colonies * New Hampshire – 1623 * Massachusetts – 1628 * Connecticut – 1635 * Rhode Island – 1636 • Middle Colonies * New York – 1613 * Delaware – 1638 * New Jersey – 1664 * Pennsylvania – 1681 • Southern Colonies * Virginia – 1607 * North Carolina – 1653 * South Carolina – 1670 * Georgia – 1733

Slavery in the Colonies • During the colonial times the treatment of slaves was often depended in which colony you lived in. • Southern colony slaves – worked under harsh labor conditions. • Middle and New England Colonies – had more freedom and were often treated more humanely than the Southern Colonies slaves.. • Slavery in the colonies lasted from around 1517 to 1865.

Slavery in Connecticut • The first African-Americans came to Connecticut soon after the first settlements were founded. • In 1678 there was an estimate of less than 30 slaves in Connecticut, with 3 or 4 being imported annually from Barbados. • Barbados is an island that is located just east of the Caribbean Sea. • In 1680, there were only 30 slaves in Connecticut. • By 1774 over 6,500 people were African-American slaves. (3.4% of the population) • Slavery in Connecticut lasted about 208 years. ( 1640 – 1848) • In 1848 slavery was outlawed in Connecticut.

  7. Conclusion The 13 colonies were colonies ruled by the British government. People came to the colonies mainly because of financial or religious reasons. The colonies were split in to 3 groups, the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies. When the Declaration of Independence was signed the 13 colonies became 13 independent states creating the United States of America. Slaves work conditions were depended on what colony they lived in. When slavery first started the number of slaves in the colonies were not very high. As the years past the number of slaves in the colonies continued to increase. Slaves in Connecticut were imported from Barbados, an island east of the Caribbean Sea. Slavery in Connecticut lasted from about 1640 to 1848.
