  1. George Washington “Father of His Country”

  2. George Washington was the first president of the United States.

  3. George was born on February 22, 1732 in this house in Virginia. His family had a farm.

  4. Virginia Oceanside, California

  5. George’s father died when he was 11. George went to live with his half brother Lawrence.

  6. George went to school and learned how to read and write. He learned how to be a gentleman.

  7. George became a surveyor and learned how to make maps.

  8. He fought in the French and Indian War and then served in the Virginia government.

  9. He married Martha Custis in 1759. Martha was a widow.

  10. Martha had two children. Their names were Patsy and Jack.

  11. George and Martha lived at Mt. Vernon and had a farm there.

  12. When the American colonies decided to declare their freedom from England, they asked George to lead their army.

  13. George and his soldiers fought for many years, in the winter and in the summer.

  14. When the war finally ended, the 13 Colonies were now free from England. The United States of America was born.

  15. George became the first president of the United States and served for eight years.

  16. After being President, George moved back to Mt. Vernon to live. He died in 1799. He was 67 years old.

  17. George Washington helped lead his people to fight to be free from England.

  18. He led his people again as the first President of the United States. This is why he is called “The Father of His Country.”

  19. We honor George by celebrating Presidents Day. Presidents Day is celebrated in February. George Washington Abraham Lincoln

  20. We have honored George Washington by putting him on our money.

  21. We have honored George Washington by putting his face on stamps.

  22. We have honored George by naming our country’s capital city after him: Washington, D.C.

  23. We built the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., to honor George Washington.

  24. We put George Washington’s face on Mt. Rushmore to honor him.
