Imagery. Definition. Imagery - an image, in its basic sense, is something concrete that appeals to any of the five senses - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell - as well as metaphor, simile, and personification. Purpose of understanding imagery.

  2. Definition Imagery - an image, in its basic sense, is something concrete that appeals to any of the five senses - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell - as well as metaphor, simile, and personification.

  3. Purpose of understanding imagery We need to know about imagery so we they can write papers using specific and concrete details. We should be able to tie a specific image to an over arching theme occurring within the text

  4. TO Activate imagery in our mindsWe will use the 5 senses:

  5. sHare out: Describe the following scenes with as many sensory descriptors as possible • Chilly evening • Sticky- sweet marshmallows • Crackle of the campfire • The full moon rises through the dark night • I hear the tent door unzip • I curl up in my soft sleeping bag

  6. One more.. describe all 5 senses

  7. We’ve seen what imagery can do from our examples: they seem more real and remind us of similar experiences from our own lives. So, What does imagery do for our text? • Reminds of the humanity of the Japanese culture • Makes their world and culture relevant or related to ours through common experiences

  8. Passage, imagery, point find one example of each sense and fill it out in your graphic organizer. It should have three parts 1) The page number 2) The imagery you have found 3) The meaning of the imagery. ie How does it relate to the text on a thematic level?

Summary • There are multiple examples of imagery occurring in Hiroshima, to finish the graphic organizer, look through all of your examples that you located and answer the following question in complete sentences: • What do you think the importance of including these images into the text is? What do they do to the story and to the reader?
