  1. Cycles of matter in ecosystem Standard 4 Key Idea 6 PI 6.1 MU 6.1b & 6.1c http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHON

  2. Bell ringer questions • What elements are found in glucose? • What elements are found in protein? Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen

  3. What make up living things? Chemical components such as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen make up the molecules of living things.

  4. Cycle of chemical components Atoms such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are limited. • These are used and recycled between living things and nonliving things. How?  Pass through food webs and are combined and recombined in different ways.

  5. Can you name two important processes that involve carbon? Hint: happen in mitochondria and chloroplast Photosynthesis and respiration (cellular respiration)

  6. Carbon cyle Used in photosynthesis and respiration • Photosynthesis CO2 + water  glucose + O2 • Respiration Glucose + O2  CO2 and water http://elinow-bioreview2.wikispaces.com/Cellular+Respiration

  7. Carbon-Hydrogen-Oxygen cycle

  8. Nitrogen cycle • Nitrates can be used by plants. • When plants and animals are decomposed, ammonia is produced.

  9. Nitrogen cycle http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~plantbio/osu_pcmb/pcmb_lab_resources/pcmb102_activities/n_fixation/nitrogen_cycle.html

  10. Exit ticket Which information is represented in the diagram? • Respiration and photosynthesis are interrelated. • Transpiration and condensation are related to the water cycle. • Decomposers release a material that is acted on by other organisms. • Predators and their prey are involved in many interactions.
