  2. What is a Journal Club? • Forum for discussing relevant and interesting pieces of literature • Read the literature • Analyze & critique articles • Practice presentation skills • Discuss related ideas • Appreciate other perspectives

  3. Why a Journal Club? • Learn about our field • Keep abreast of new developments • Foster informal discussion and interaction • Help/improve presentation skills

  4. How to do a Journal Club?

  5. Step1: Getting Ready • Choose a few good peer-reviewed journal articles Relevant to biostatistics and epidemiology • Interesting for you & audience • Important result or approach • Send the paper to the organizer: 1 week before your presentation • Read critically • Take notes while reading • Reread even more critically • Skim related articles or web information

  6. Step2: Presentation • Assume audience read the paper • Do not assume audience understood it • State authors’ take home messages • Focus on interesting/controversial issues

  7. Step2: Presentation • Introduce yourself • Why did you choose this paper? • How does it relate to your interests? • General background info (briefly!) • Summarize article • Provide context • Critique, question, react • Conclude

  8. Step2: Provide Context • Research author and related work • Compare & Contrast • Earlier work (follow citations) • Conflicting work (by others) • Later work (follow citation index)

  9. Step2: Critique, Question, React • Objectively • Did the author(s) support their point? • Was their support valid? • Subjectively • How does it relate to your own experiences? • Why did you find this paper interesting or important? • What do you think the impact of this paper is?

  10. Step2: Conclude • Restate author’s take-home message • State your own take-home message • Provide a personal perspective

Summary-I • Everyone attending the JC is expected they read the paper before coming to the JC • It will be 9am-10am last Tuesday of the month • The paper will be available 1 week before the presentation • It will be informal discussion forum with light snacks--potluck • Open to everyone: provided the article is read • Web-site soon available • Tentative JC Schedule distributed
