  4. Figurative • Not literal • Figure of speech • Means more then what the words actually say Figuratively, what would kick the bucket mean?

  5. Connotation • Associated with figurative • Emotional implications of a word • Associations connected to a word • The impressions or ideas suggested by the word. Looking at your list of denotative words… what are the connotative meanings… what do you think of when you think of these words? are your impressions positive or negative? Why does it matter? • The denotation and connotation of words can effect the attitude/ tone of a sentence. • Example: • negative • There are over 2,000 vagrants in the city. • neutral • There are over 2,000 people with no fixed address in the city. • positive • There are over 2,000 homeless in the city.

  7. Why does it matter? Cont… • Which sentence suggests there is love and warmth present? 1. I cannot wait to get back home. 2. I cannot wait to get back to the house. • Which would you rather have describe you? 1. You smell fragment today. 2. You smell odorous today.

  8. Practice • Sort the following groups of words into negative, neutral, and positive connotative meanings. • Car, beater, pimped out ride • Pleasantly plump, over weight, fat • She looks: good, amazing, interesting • That movie was hilarious, funny, amusing • Your house is: average, decent, awesome
