  1. Vanderbilt-Pakistan Welcome Lesson January 2013

  2. Dreams by Langston Hughes Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.

  3. Questions • What is the author’s advice? What does he say will happen if you do not follow it? • Define a metaphor. Where are they in the poem? How are they effective? Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.

  4. Do you agree with the author on the importance of dreams? Why or why not?

  5. Fire and Ice by Robert Frost Some say the world will end in fire Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know of enough hate To say that for destructionice Is also great And would suffice.

  6. Questions • Literally, how does the author say the world will end? • What do you think ice and fire represent? Parallel Structure: “Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice.” How is that effective in comparing two things? Some say the world will end in fire Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know of enough hate To say that for destructionice Is also great And would suffice.

  7. What is one way we could prevent the “fire” and “ice” from ending our world today?

  8. Homework • Write two of your own metaphors comparing two similar things. • Challenge: Try writing a poem! • Please read “A Special Present” for next class. • Create a vocab list (around 10 words) for terms you may not know in the poem.
