  1. AP Physics

  2. Two AP versions AP Physics B: trigonometry based course that covers virtually all areas of physics. AP Physics C: calculus based course that only covers mechanics and electricity/magnetism. AP Physics C is the more rigorous course that simulates an actual college course. (this is the one you are taking )

  3. AP Difficulty Level • In the past, you may have been used to plugging numbers into a known formula and getting a numerical answer. • While this is good, at the college level, you’ll be pushed to: • create new formulas from known concepts • solve problems in terms of variables • apply your knowledge to problems that are different from what was done in class…

  4. Two Halves of AP Physics C The AP physics C course is unusual in that it is divided into two halves: Mechanics Electricity and Magnetism

  5. Taking the Test? Currently, you are “required” to take at least 1 of the AP physics C exams. Mechanics and/or E&M. You can earn college credits for each of the exams. However, the exams do cost money, $86 each. If you choose not to take either, your weighting for the class will be changed to honors level.

  6. Grading the Test All AP tests are graded on a scale from 1 to 5. 5= extremely well qualified 4= well qualified 3= qualified 2= possibly qualified 1= you stink! Most colleges only award credit for these scores.

  7. Credit Example If you took both sections of the AP physics C test, and scored a 4 or a 5, Penn State would award you credit as if you had taken and passed two whole physics classes. That’s 8 credits! This may free you to take other classes, graduate sooner, ,etc.

  8. One Half of Each AP Test Multiple choice section ~35 questions, 45 minutes No calculator or formula sheets allowed. Basic calculations and estimating used. Tests reasoning, conceptual understanding, analysis of graphs, etc. Fnet = ma

  11. Second Half of Each AP Test Free response section Three problems in 45 minutes. Multiple parts for problems. Involve a variety of concepts. Show all work, units, etc. Partial credit given. Use formula sheet/ calculators.

  13. Practice and Preparation • Throughout the class, we will adopt practices to prepare students for the AP test in the event they choose to take it. We will: • Have tests that mimic the AP tests • Use the same formula sheets • Cover all the included content
